Introduction to Date Codes & Lot Codes
Date codes and lot codes are commonly used identifiers on electronic components and semiconductors.
Customers often associate these codes with product age, quality, traceability, and reliability.
This page explains what date codes and lot codes mean, why they exist, and how they should be interpreted
when purchasing electronic components.
Understanding these identifiers helps customers make informed decisions while ensuring realistic
expectations regarding product lifecycle, storage, and manufacturer quality standards.
What Are Date Codes?
A date code indicates when a component was manufactured or assembled.
The format of a date code varies by manufacturer and product type and may represent a specific week,
month, or year of production.
Date codes are primarily used by manufacturers for internal production tracking, inventory management,
and quality assurance. They do not represent an expiration date and do not automatically indicate reduced
performance or reliability.
What Are Lot Codes?
A lot code (also known as a batch code) identifies a specific production batch of components manufactured
under the same or similar conditions, such as materials, equipment, and production timeframe.
Lot codes enable traceability within the supply chain and support quality investigations, process
improvements, and corrective actions where required.
Why Date & Lot Codes Matter
Date codes and lot codes play an important role in traceability throughout the supply chain.
They allow products to be linked to manufacturing records and quality control processes and support
compliance with applicable industry standards.
Electronic components do not inherently degrade due to age alone when stored and handled correctly.
Suitability for use depends on the component specifications, storage conditions, and the intended
application rather than solely on the production date.
How to Find Date & Lot Codes
Date codes and lot codes are typically marked on the component body, packaging label, reel, tray,
or moisture barrier packaging. The format and placement vary depending on the manufacturer and
component type.
All products shipped by us contain a date code and a lot code wherever technically and
packaging-wise possible.
In certain cases, particularly when customers purchase partial quantities or samples,
a lot code may not always be available. This typically occurs when the original manufacturer packaging
containing the lot code label is not fully present or cannot be passed on with the shipment.
Additional Resources & Support
We sell electronic components through official distribution channels for active products and through
approved supply channels for end-of-life or discontinued components. All products are handled in
accordance with generally accepted industry practices for storage, handling, and logistics.
If you have questions regarding date codes, lot codes, traceability, or suitability for a specific
application, our team will be happy to provide further information prior to purchase.
